New Year Honor Self

Ways to Soothe and Uplift your Spirit with the Start of the Year

Welcome to 2017! We here at hope you had a great holiday! For anyone who is feeling dispirited this season due to the state of the world, you may find hope in John Steinbeck’s words to a friend on New Year’s Day 1941. “Speaking of the happy new year, I wonder if any year ever had less chance of being happy. It’s as though the whole race were indulging in a kind of species introversion — as though we looked inward on our neuroses. And the thing we see isn’t very pretty… So we go into this happy new year, knowing that our species has learned nothing, can, as a race, learn nothing — that the experience of ten thousand years has made no impression on the instincts of the million years that preceded.”

Don’t worry, we know this sounds further discouraging, but just wait its getting to the good part! “Not that I have lost any hope. All the goodness and the heroisms will rise up again, then be cut down again and rise up. It isn’t that the evil thing wins — it never will — but that it doesn’t die. I don’t know why we should expect it to. It seems fairly obvious that two sides of a mirror are required before one has a mirror, that two forces are necessary in man before he is man.”

We are aware that words alone are often not enough to calm the storm raging inside our souls. If you are seeking guidance to calm and comfort your spirit now that the holidays are over, so that you can face the year ahead in assurance and confidence we have some suggestions for you.

Honor your feelings

Attempting to ignore the issues or worries facing you will only create a volcanic pressure situation. They will fill and boil until they erupt. It is much better to allow yourself to feel and experience your emotions without judging yourself about them. Find a calm space to meditate and let your body mind and spirit accept that we all experience a full range of human emotions almost daily. It is perfectly normal and acceptable for you to feel the way you do. Don’t attempt to resolve the emotions or dig into them, simply observe and notice them.

Reflect on your feelings

Reflect on your feelings

Once you have honored your feelings you may find some of them have resolved themselves. Others may still linger. Reflect on these and consider any adjustments you many need to make in your life. Take the time to nurture and heal your soul from any damages these feelings may have done to it. Be honest with yourself. Take notice if you have played a role in getting to your current state and what changes you can make to bring yourself to a place of peace and joy.

Ground yourself

Ground yourself

Just as you’ve honored your feelings now you need to honor your physical form on this plane. If you are unsure of what grounds you try taking a warm bath with sea salts and essential oils, or relaxing in a quite space with a cup of tea. Take a few deep focused breaths and feel yourself let the negative emotions go and reconnect yourself with the earth. Remember that good physical self-care is just as important as your mental self-care.

If none of this has helped you, you may want to consider a change in your physical environment. Something as simple as getting some fresh air in new scenery can often help center and ground you. It is important to do what works for you! We wish you a happy and healthy year ahead.
