The Connection Between Yoga and Astrology
Yoga is about ‘yoking’ the sun and the moon. With Yoga we invite into our lives, cosmic wisdom, in addition to the mastery we work towards within our physical bodies on the earth. Our physical human bodies are a literal microcosm of the solar system. The Sun, together with its family of planets, moon, and asteroids tells of an unfolding story of a search for union. And as the Earth orbits the Sun in our outer Solar System, our body contains a completely unique expression of our inner solar system here on earth. This gives us insight into the characteristics of who we are. The uniting of these concepts is often referred to as Yogastrology.
Yougastrology says that every sign has a corresponding part of the body that needs focus and attention in your yoga practice. Like there are 12 core yoga poses, there are 12 horoscope signs. When overlapped, they match exactly in terms of the physical and medical benefit of each posture with the known physical planetary rulership of each sign. We are taught to create a moving horoscope with our body to strive for unity and balance.
The best pose for your sign
Capricorn (22 December–20 January) – Strengthen your alignment with chair pose, mountain pose, and tree pose.
Aquarius (21 January–19 February) – Lotus pose, eagle pose, or revolved side angle can help shift focus to movement forward.
Pisces (20 February–20 March) – Connect to the earth through mountain pose, half frog pose, and standing split.
Aries (March 21–April 20) – Try a calming standing forward bend, head-to-knee pose, and savasana.
Taurus (21 April–21 May) – Cow pose, cat pose, and bridge can help you release pent up stress in the head, neck, and shoulders.
Gemini (22 May–21 June) – Let some of that responsibility roll off your shoulders with bow pose, cobra pose, and downward facing dog.
Cancer (22 June –22 July) – Break out of your shell by focusing on chest and heart-opening poses like upward plank pose, half moon pose, and dancer’s pose.
Leo (23 July –22 August) – Do we really need to tell you to try the lion pose? You will also benefit from spine strengthening camel and revolved triangle poses.
Virgo (23 August–23 September) – Work on opening up with the peacock pose, full boat pose, and seated twisting pose.
Libra (24 September–23 October) – Be balanced with tree pose, extended hand-to-toe pose, or side crane pose.
Scorpio (24 October–22 November) – Release energy and relax the pelvis through camel pose, lotus pose, and wide-angle seated forward bend.
Sagittarius (23 November–21 December) – Counteract any hip stress with lizard pose, half pigeon pose, and high lunge.
