Tarot- The Fool

The Card

On the Fool Tarot card, a young man stands on the edge of a cliff, as he sets out on a new adventure. He is gazing upwards toward the heavens seemingly unaware that he is about to step off a precipice into the unknown. Over his shoulder he carries his belongings in a small bundle. The white rose in his left hand represents his purity and innocence. And at his feet is a small white dog, representing loyalty and protection. The mountains behind the Fool symbolize the challenges to be faced in the future.

Interpretation

When drawn upright the fool represents beginnings, innocence, spontaneity, and a free spirit. When drawn reversed it represents holding back, recklessness, and risk-taking.

The Fool’s Journey

The Fool stands for each of us as we begin our journey of life. He is a fool because only a simple soul has the innocent faith to undertake such a journey with all its hazards and pain. At the start of his trip, the Fool is a newborn – fresh, open and spontaneous. The figure on Card 0 has his arms flung wide, and his head held high. He is ready to embrace whatever comes his way, unaware of the risks & downfalls coming to them. You’ll see that the struggles of The Fool get more enlightened as they go on and encounter the rest of the deck, mirroring our own journeys.
